Typography has come out of books into branding, sculpture and architecture. Our famous designer with a New York address Mirko Ilić presented his new book Lettering Large: Art and Design of Monumental Typography in the Zagreb Architects’ Society on January 21st.
He wrote the book together with a well-known design critic Steven Heller and published it under The Monacelli Press. It’s their fifth book and the second one focused on specific typographic phenomena, this one presenting solutions of monumental typography mostly in exteriors and mainly with signalization and decorative function.
Among the most dramatic and effective examples from the USA, Europe and Asia, the authors have selected the Business Centre Zavrtnica façade in Zagreb, a project by Brigada and Bruketa&Žinić OM, also on the book covers.
The book also features the cult historic examples such as the Monza Biennale Internazionale delle Arti Decorative Pavillion, IBM’s New York World’s Fair Pavillion, Alexandria Library, House of Terror Museum Budapets or the Minneart Building in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
