Brigada Appoints Vlatka Leskovar As Its Creative Director

After two years of work at the agency Brigada (B&Z sister company) in position of product designer, Vlatka Leskovar has been appointed Creative Director. Offices of Croatia Osiguranje insurance company and Addiko Bank express, AlpStories shop, offices of Infinum and, are just some of the projects of this agency on which Leskovar worked. She also designed the Umamice chairs, which are today an independent product of Brigada, and were created during the design of Umami restaurant whose entire unique accessories were created by Leskovar and her team.

“Although my specialty is product design, what inspires me in Brigada is its integrated approach to space, where I was part of a larger team of professionals of different expertise, from sales and marketing to architecture, working to resolve some of the client’s problems, and where we know exactly why we set a strategy underpinning the design, and the objectives we want to achieve,” said Leskovar.

She has a master’s degree in industrial design at the School of Design at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, where she was awarded the annual prize for her graduate thesis.

How did Brigada redesign Design Week

The third Design Week Zagreb, the largest Croatia’s design event, owes its design to Brigada. In approximately 2000 square meters of a former factory space Brigada has designed a system for displaying four different festival programs using the basic natural materials and optimizing it inside a tight budget.

Programs and Brigada’s design:

  1. Market – shopping stands
  2. Expo – exhibition stands
  3. Schools – student exhibition space
  4. Nordic House – Nordic design exhibition, partner countries of the festival
  5. Lecture stage
  6. Signalization totem

In the making of each element Brigada used OSB panels, latticework and pallets, designed in order to satisfy the program needs and enable simple transformations.

Pedestals are easily adjusted for different purposes: object display, poster hanging, sitting, storage boxes and so on. With a simple intervention, the stands are transformed from a shopping desk to a wardrobe for example.

The Nordic House stands out. It was used for exhibiting the official partner countries design. Inspired with the minimalism of Nordic design white cloth was used and was hung over the suspended latticework. This way the space was split in four parts and the roofs were formed reminiscent of the ones seen in the North European countries.

The spatial organization, design, optimisation of the materials and techniques – all this created a systematic and visually attractive space, proving that the budget doesn’t necessarily need to limit creativity and consistency of the idea.

Bruketa&Zinic OM Wien and Brigada in Monaco

Being one of the world’s leading manufacturer of carton packaging, Mayr – Melnhof has earned its global positioning through outstanding performance. Bruketa&Zinic OM Wien and Brigada were in charge for their exhibition stand at the Luxepack Fair Monaco 2015.

Basis of the design concept was to interpret convincing materiality of MM products through high level craftsmanship and hand made finishing of elements. They function as unique artefacts while having function of eye catching signage and decorative exhibition fixtures. In doing so the visual appearance is using different versions of natural or oxidised copper to communicate MM’s products.

Free standing pedestals covered with leafs of natural copper with hand made crystal vitrines were made for this occasion, with warm light discretely glowing from within and refracting through an uneven structure of the glass. One wall is made of natural copper with MM logo in oxidized copper finishing and another wall uses wallpaper with flower image with calla lilies chosen for their emotional associations and elegance.

Brigada nominated for the Zagreb Salon of Architecture award

Brigada, part of Bruketa&Žinić OM group for shop concepts, spatial and product design, has been nominated for the 50th Zagreb Salon of Architecture award with the exhibition design The Culture of Smoking. Playing with the idea of taboo, Brigada’s intention was to design an anti-exhibition – a display that hides the exhibits even from the museum itself. 298 projects entered the competition, 131 have been selected for the Exhibition, and 25 projects were nominated for the award. Brigada won the Red Dot award for the same project.
